Alicante is a province of Spain located on the east coast. Alicante has a population of just under 2 million, and covers an area of 5,816.5 km2. . Alicante attracts tourists and ex-pats for many reasons; it has stunning beaches, great weather, well priced property, and low cost flights.

Alicante has on average more than 2,800 hours of sunshine each year and an average annual temperature of 19.3 degrees Celsius. The weather in Alicante is perfect for outdoor activities, especially for people who are enthusiastic about water sports and becoming a great location for golf.

The mountainous province of Alicante has a very diverse climate, the Costa Blanca having a Mediterranean climate while the mountainous region having a continental climate. Alicante is home to the famous coast line of Costa Blanca, a popular destination amongst tourists. A tourist favourite, Benidorm is located on the coast of Alicante which is a 45 minute drive north. 

The capital city of the region is also called Alicante, whose name is believed to have originated from when the Romans ruled the land more than 2000 years ago, the original name of Alicante was “Lucentum” which means “City of Light”. 

There are many other towns in the area, such as Benitachell and Aspe, and popular tourist/expat destinations such as Altea, Javea, Calpe and Denia. 

Alicante also boasts a spacious harbour and amongst other historical features of the city, it has the Castle of Santa Barbara (Castillo de Santa Barbara), a huge medieval fortress overlooking Alicante from the north. There is easy access via a cable car up through the mountains from Jovellanas Avenue. 

The city of Alicante has a regular ferry service to the Balearic Islands, which are also accessible from the ferries at Dania. Alicante also has a growing International airport which is one of the busiest in Spain, which saw over 9 million passengers coming into the country in 2010. The Airport is located approximately 10 Km from Alicante city and Elche. 

All-in-all the Alicante region of Spain has something for everyone, whether looking to relax or have an adventure. And with a large expat community, it is an easy choice for   British people as a place to live or work, making this region a great investment when to buying property in Spain.
