Aracaju is the capital of the State of Sergipe, North East op Brazil and is approximately 350 km (217 miles) North of Salvador.

Aracaju has a population of just under 600.000 inhabitants, which represents approximately 33% of the state population. The coast of Aracaju has many unspoiled beaches, such as Santa Luzia Island, and urban beaches, such as the Atalaia. These coastal neighborhoods include playgrounds, squares, residential buildings, bars, nightclubs, restaurants, banks and hotels and many sports facilities such as football fields, volleyball and basketball courts.

The city of Aracaju is home to the Federal University of Sergipe.

Aracaju has good transportation links. The city is served by the Santa Maria Airport and is located only 12 km (7.5 miles) from downtown Aracaju and 3.5 km from most famous Atalaia beach. Aracaju is also connected to the major cities of Brazil by BR-235 and BR-101 federal highways.

The climate is hot and humid, with rainy season from March to August. The average annual temperature is 26 ° C. The warmest months in Aracaju are: January, February and March, with temperatures averaging 27° C. The weather in coldest in July and August, with temperatures averaging 24° C and at night the temperature only dropping to 22° C. Aracaju experiences its wettest months between March and August with the driest months, between September and February.

Aracaju, one of the first cities to be planned in Brazil, was built with the intention of becoming the state capital.
