The former fishing village and port of Calpe (Catalonian pronunciation) in the province of Alicante lies some 70kms north of Alicante Property | Costa Blanca Real Estate | Spain | Pure Property town airport and is also serviced by Murcia airport, which is about an hours’ drive away. By road, it is connected to the A7 Autovia del Mediterraneo which runs along the coast from France to Algeciras. Alternatively, the N332 national road is considered to be very scenic.
Visited by the writer, Ernest Hemingway, in the 1950s, the village became popular with foreign visitors and buyers, and today more than half the population of around 30,000 are non-Spanish.
The landscape here is one of the most beautiful in the region and is dominated by the iconic 332m high Rock of Ifach, which is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. There are 14 beaches in the immediate vicinity and most of them have been awarded EEC blue flag thanks to their beauty, cleanliness and good quality amenities. The Rock of Ifach protects many of the beaches from wind and waves and this has made the area popular with families.
The ideal Mediterranean climate makes outdoor activities such as hiking, walking, golf and watersports possible throughout the year and the nearby national park of Penyal d'Ifac is a great place for nature lovers and bird watchers to visit. There are also many Roman, Iberian and Arabic archaeological sites and historical places of interest worth visiting in the area.
Calpe offers potential property buyers and residents a mix of the traditional and the modern, with excellent facilities including an international school, shops, supermarkets, veterinary services, medical centres and banks. The local economy is largely centred around fishing and tourism, although real estate and the services industry is a growth area for jobs. . For those interested in buying property in the area, a wide range of options, ranging from apartments to bungalows, villas and chalets are on offer. Developing something of a reputation as the California of Europe, the price of properties in the region has seen tremendous capital growth in recent years, making them excellent investment prospects, particularly for those interested in rental income.
Buyers are advised to take advantage of reasonable prices, buyer’s mortgages and incentive tax breaks offered by the Spanish government to snap up a good piece of real estate in the area while they can.
