Granada is a province on the south coast of Spain, in the eastern part of Andalucia. Its capital city is also called Granada. The province covers an area of 12,635km². Granada has a population of over 875,000 with approximately 30% living in the capital.
Thanks to its location, historic buildings and monuments, Granada is a favourite spot amongst tourists as there are many things to see and do. It is generally sunny all year round in Granada although in the winter months it can become cold during the night. Boasting 320 days of sun with average temperatures of 20c. The warmest months being July and August when temperatures can reach 40c. Granada has a varied climate, in the south it can be described as having a dry heat, not being humid like other parts of Spain such as Barcelona. And to the north in the mountain range of Sierra Nevada it is possible to ski in the winter months with some of the highest points having snow all year round.
The origins of the name Granada are unknown. It is believed to mean "great castle", for the Roman fortress which once stood on the Albaicin Hill.
The most famous building in Granada is probably the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C. This mighty compound of buildings stands at the foot of Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the city of Granada below and the fertile plains of the Granada province. The Alhambra is considered by some to be one of the 10 wonders of the world.
The City of Granada is home to one of the largest universities in Spain, which has around 56,000 students and also welcomes 10,000 foreign students every year. As well as providing employment to a large number of people, the university also boosts the local economy by creating demand for rental property which is another reason to buy property in Granada.
The primary industries of Granada such as agriculture and fishing play an important role in the local economy. The Granada Health Science Technological Park has created some high-skilled jobs in the biotechnology sector.
Granada Airport is situated 10 miles west of the city of Granada and 66 miles south of the city of Jaen. Apart from the City of Granada and Alhambra Palace you are within easy reach of the Costa Tropical with towns including Motril, Almunecar, Salobrena and La Herradura.
