Thanks to a mixture of historic charm, Mediterranean climate and coastal situation, Mojacar, in the Almeria province of Spanish Andalucia, is able to offer visitors and property investors an attractive place in which to holiday or purchase property.

Mojacar’s postcard-perfect Moorish old town, perched on a mountaintop with its characteristic whitewashed houses and narrow lanes, has long been a favourite haunt of artists and writers, whilst the modern resort of Mojacar Playa below benefits from its proximity to miles of unspoilt beaches, many of which have Blue European Flag status.

Over the years, Mojacar has developed something of a cult status as the place to go to get a taste of authentic Spain, and is currently one of Andalucia’s biggest and most trendy beach holiday destinations. Legend has it that Walt Disney originated from here, and in the 1960’s, the Colombian concert pianist , Don Enrique Arias, was a patron, contributing enormously to the revival of the town’s fortunes.

Home to around 7000 permanent inhabitants, Mojacar boasts some excellent family-friendly local amenities, including two golf courses and a wide range of shops, bars and eateries, many of which are situated within a stone’s throw of the sea. Thanks to its vibrant cultural heritage, there are also many art exhibitions and festivals on offer, as well as plenty of indoor and outdoor activities, including water skiing, wind surfing and horse trekking in the nearby Sierra Cabrera Mountains, to keep outdoor enthusiasts happy.

Situated in the south-eastern corner of the country, Mojacar’s nearest airport is in Almeria 80kms away, but the town is also well-serviced by the AP-7 coastal road to Murcia airport, and the A-7 which connects it to the E-15 motorway towards Almeria.

The local economy is mainly dependent on tourism and real estate development. However, language and professional services as well as child and healthcare are all growth areas.

Mojacar provides those buying property with a wide choice, ranging from villas and holiday apartments to traditional cottages and ‘casas rurales’ – perfect as an agrico-tourism investment. Most of the newer properties for sale or rent here have been sympathetically designed to fit in with the local architecture, helping them retain their capital growth potential and allowing investors to reap the benefits of excellent rental income potential, as well as tasteful holiday homes. In fact, foreign investors keen on securing real estate in an unspoilt and less built-up part of Spain will be hard-pressed to find a more suitable and affordable location.
