The economy of Murcia is mainly based on agricultural products; it is common to find Murcia's tomatoes and lettuce, and especially lemons and oranges. Murcia is also a producer of wines. In recent years, the economy of the region has turned towards "residential tourism" where people are buying their second home either for themselves or for the buy to let to holiday market.
Murcia’s economy is supported by fairs and congresses, museums, theatres, cinema, music, aquariums, bullfighting, restaurants, hotels, camping, sports, foreign students, and tourism.
Murcia has previously been ruled by many historic civilisations, the first major one being the Carthaginians, followed by the Romans and then the Moors who were evicted from the region by Ferdinand III of Castile. Each ruling civilisation left behind their own unique piece of history, such examples are the Roman theatre, Cartagena, the many Cathedrals, and castles.
