Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom shared with England, Wales and Northern Island. Scotland Occupies the Northern third of Great Britain, sharing its border with England to the South. In addition to the mainland, Scotland constitutes over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.

The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, which is the second largest city and one of Europe's largest financial centres. Glasgow is actually Scotland's largest city and was one of the world's leading industrial cities. The North Atlantic and the North Sea, contains the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, which is Scotland’s third largest city, the title of Europe's oil capital.

Scotland has a population of just over 5 million with the total area being 30,414 sq. m and is comparable to the size of the Czech Republic. Scotland's only land border is with England, and runs for 60 miles between the basin of the River Tweed on the East coast and the Solway Firth in the West.

Scotland has a western style open mixed economy that is closely linked with the rest of Europe and the wider world. Traditionally, the Scottish economy has been dominated by heavy industry underpinned by the shipbuilding in Glasgow, coal mining and steel industries. Petroleum related industries associated with the extraction of North Sea oil have also been important employers.

During the 1970s and 1980s Scotland saw a shift from a manufacturing focus towards a more service-oriented economy. Edinburgh is the financial services centre of Scotland and the sixth largest financial centre in Europe in terms of funds under management, behind London, Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich and Amsterdam. Scottish exports (excluding intra-UK trade) have been estimated to be over £17.5 billion, of which 70% were attributable to manufacturing. Scotland's primary exports include whisky, electronics and the financial services.

Tourism is widely recognised as a key contributor to the Scottish economy. It is estimated tourism accounts for up to 5% of GDP and 7.5% of employment. Golfers from around the World are attracted to the many courses in Scotland. Fishing, Hill walking, island hopping are all part of the tourist industry for Scotland and don’t forget the winter sports that include skiing.

There is much interest with investor who are purchasing holiday homes on the latest outdoor theme parks where you can play golf, go fishing walk the many trails or, just relax in the Country side. Although many are located in the Country side, often with the great transportation links you are often only 30 minutes from the capital Edinburgh or the largest city Glasgow.
